UEFA’s 32-Man Best Players List Is Kind of Insane

UEFA has just released the names of the nominees for the Player of the Year award, with 32 players included. There are the obvious picks, like Messi, Ronaldo, and Xavi, who I think would be on anyone’s list. But then it starts to get a little stranger. Les Davies, a winger for Bangor City, has made the list, but not a single Bayern Munich player made the cut. That means the likes of Mario Gomez, who scored over 40 league goals and was second only to Messi in Champions League scoring, has not been nominated, along with Ribery, Neuer, Schweinsteiger and Robben.

Fernando Torres has made the list after one of the worst seasons of his career, but Chelsea Player of the Year Juan Mata did not. Wayne Rooney also had a weak year and was included. In the end the most deserving candidate will likely win, but it’s still a shame some of those who would be honored to be on this list will not get that privilege.

Complete List: Aguero (Man City), Xabi Alonso (Real Madrid), Balotelli (Man City), Blaszczykowski (Borussia Dortmund), Buffon (Juventus), Casillas (Real Madrid), Cech (Chelsea), Coentrao (Real Madrid), Davies (Bangor), Drogba (Shanghai Shenhua), Fabregas (Barcelona), Falcao (Atletico Madrid), Hart (Man City), Ibrahimovic (AC Milan), Iniesta (Barcelona), Kagawa (Man Utd), Kompany (Man City), Lampard (Chelsea), Messi (Barcelona), Modric (Tottenham), Ozil (Real Madrid), Pepe (Real), Pirlo (Juventus), Ramos (Real Madrid), Raul (Al-Sadd Sports Club), Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Rooney (Man Utd), Silva (Man City), Torres (Chelsea), Y Toure (Man City). van Persie (Arsenal), Xavi (Barcelona).
