Preview: Bayern Munich vs. Dortmund
On Sunday the best possible precursor to the Bundesliga season occurs, with FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund vying for the Super Cup title at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. Although the outcome likely has little to do with this season’s results in the league and in Europe, bragging rights are on the line, especially with Dortmund having won their last five match-ups against their Bavarian rivals.
The consensus is, like the last few years, the Bundesliga title will be a dogfight between these two teams who have both only strengthened their squads over the summer. Among their dealings, Dortmund have brought in Marco Reus—widely considered one of the best young players in Europe—while Bayern Munich have added the likes of Mandzukic, Shaqiri, Dante, and Pizarro, with possibly Javi Martinez yet to come if the price is right. That would seem to give Bayern the advantage going into the game, except that the team has had a rough preseason and have lost Gomez, Alaba, Contento, and Rafinha to injuries, with Schweinsteiger’s fitness in question. For Dortmund, there is also doubt over whether Götze will be fit to play in the match after suffering from conjunctivitis.
The game should have some great play and a terrific atmosphere, even for a mostly meaningless match, as this rivalry is currently dominating the league. The Super Cup kicks off at 8:00 PM (Munich time) this Sunday, and the Bundesliga returns Friday, August 24th with current Bundesliga champions Dortmund playing Werder Bremen at home. Bayern begin their league campaign the next day against SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
