Men’s Olympic Football: Semifinals

Today’s action was a little quieter after an insane women’s semifinal match-up between the U.S. and Canada yesterday, but both games today still had some great play. Japan led early, but Mexico came back to win, and Brazil beat a tough South Korean side in the second semifinal. Mexico and Brazil will play on August 11th for the gold medal, and Japan and South Korea will play a day earlier for third place. [Photo Credit: Getty]

Men’s Olympic Football: Quarterfinals

While the women’s games saw more dominant performances, there were some very closely contested matches in the men’s quarterfinals games. In the end probably the stronger of the teams have all made it through to the semifinals, which will be played on August 7th, but the spirit of underdog teams like Honduras and Senegal gave this tournament a great boost.

Quarterfinal Results:

• Japan 3-0 Egypt
• Mexico 4-2 Senegal (after extra time)
• Brazil 3-2 Honduras
• Great Britain 1-1* South Korea (* win 5-4 on penalties)

Semifinal Match-ups:

• Mexico vs. Japan

Men’s Olympic Football: Matchday 3

The stage is set for the Olympic knockout round. After today’s results, Great Britain and Senegal from Group A will play in the quarterfinals. From Group B, Mexico and South Korea move on. Men’s Olympic Football: Matchday 2

What an upset today, with 10-man Senegal besting Uruguay stars Cavani and Suarez. Brazil also had problems getting around Belarus’ defense, but they persevered and came away with all three points. But most shockingly Spain went down 1-0 to Honduras in the first half and couldn’t come back, meaning they are mathematically eliminated from the tournament. With today’s results all four groups have teams still battling for the right to move on to the knockout stages, so don’t miss the final group games on August 1st in what should feature some amazing matches. Men’s Olympic Football: Matchday 1

We all know that the Euro tournament dominates in Olympic years, but there sure are a lot of fantastic players in this competition. Brazil, the favorites for the gold, looked like they were in complete control in the first half of their match, but Egypt caused them trouble with two goals in the second half. 2012 Olympics - Men’s Football

We’ve already looked at the women’s tournament for the 2012 Olympics, but now it’s time to shift our focus on the men’s games, which will feature some amazing talent.

The matches will begin one day before the opening ceremony, with group games starting July 26th and the final game being played on August 11th. There are four groups. Group A: Great Britain, Senegal, United Arab Emirates, Uruguay. Group B: Mexico, South Korea, Gabon, Switzerland. Group C: Brazil, Egypt, Belarus, New Zealand. Group D: Spain, Japan, Honduras, Morocco.

For a schedule of the group games, find it here. While the Euro tournament really overshadows the Olympics for the men’s teams, there are still some great matches coming up, including Great Britain vs. Uruguay, Mexico vs. South Korea, and Spain vs. Japan. Spain and Brazil are favorites to win the gold, even though both are fielding quite young teams, but there are some teams that could pull off the upset and make this a tournament to remember.
