Women’s Olympic Football: Final
The women have made this an unforgettable tournament, and it has been a pleasure to watch this Olympic competition because of their level of play. Unfortunately it had to end, but women’s football couldn’t have gone out on a better note in this tournament than with a 2011 World Cup rematch featuring the two best sides in the world. It’s obvious the U.S. and Japan teams have great respect for each other, but there could only be one gold medal winner, and this time it was the United States getting their revenge with a 2-1 win. It was an extraordinary game, with such class, ability and excitement. Congrats to both teams!
Earlier in the day Canada and France played for the bronze, with Canada winning 1-0 in the dying seconds in a reversal of their heartbreaking semifinal loss. It’s a shame any of the four teams had to leave with nothing, but France showed their football prowess this year to the world and had a great tournament. [Photo Credit: Getty]
Final and Third Place Match Results:
- Gold Medal: United States
- Silver Medal: Japan
- Bronze Medal: Canada
- Fourth Place: France
