Men’s Olympic Football: Semifinals

Today’s action was a little quieter after an insane women’s semifinal match-up between the U.S. and Canada yesterday, but both games today still had some great play. Japan led early, but Mexico came back to win, and Brazil beat a tough South Korean side in the second semifinal. Mexico and Brazil will play on August 11th for the gold medal, and Japan and South Korea will play a day earlier for third place. [Photo Credit: Getty]

On Monday night at the Olympics, a soccer game, more than worthy of the hallowed ground it was played on, got the ending it so deserved. That doesn’t happen often in sports, especially in soccer, where penalty kicks so frequently settle fierce battles. This one got a buzzer shot. Old Trafford stadium, home to one of the most storied franchises in sports — Manchester United — hasn’t seen much better.

WHAT DRAMA! The final is set: Japan will be playing the United States for Olympic gold on August 9th, with Canada and France playing earlier in the day for the bronze medal. Both games were amazing, but Canada vs. the US was one of the greatest international games of the year after a brutal goalfest and Alex Morgan scoring the header in the dying seconds of extra time.
